Waitakere City Council asked us to provide a design solution to remove and replace the existing amenities building.
The proposed building needed twice as much area, but could only be within a lim-ited footprint. The budget was very con-strained due to the public funding and the nature of the building use.
The brief was to create a building that would be robust and hardwearing due to the nature of its environment and use of large machinery and vehicles at close proximity. A combination of external materials have been used to reflect the surrounding environment. Colour-steel and block work has been used to reflect the industrial nature of the area, while shadow clad brings a more human (soft) tone.
The building has an integral solar energy component, which includes solar panels for water heating and a photovoltaic solar system, which produces electricity for the building. Rainwater is also recycled back into the building.
